Curling beef ongoing months after Olympics; Canadian skip reportedly says Swedish team is 'nothing to me'

Curling has long been regarded as a gentleman’s sport. But in theMilan Cortina Olympics, its ice was the breeding ground fora fiery exchange that breathed life into an international rivalrythat’s apparently still kicking two months later.

Back in February, Swedish third Oskar Eriksson levied a serious cheating allegation against Canadian third Marc Kennedy, whom Eriksson accused of double-touching stones with his finger beyond the hog line and on the granite part of the rock.

Things boiled over after the ninth end of an 8-6 Canada victory in round-robin action of the men’s competition, for which the Canadians eventually won gold.

Kennedy snapped at Eriksson with a profanity-laced retort in a heated back-and-forth that went viral during this year’s Games. What followed wasa temporary adjustment by World Curlingthat called for two umpires to move between the sheets, cycling through to watch hog lines up close while monitoring for infractions. That led to complaints,as reported by the Associated Press at the time, and World Curling reportedly swiftly eased back on its play surveillance.

Curling is a well-mannered sport, in which its participants are trusted to officiate themselves to a certain extent, with the spirit of the game in mind. Some curlers weren’t offended by Canada’s double-touching. Eriksson clearly was, and he still believes it makes a significant impact on matches.

“A lot of people have been talking about, like, ‘You can’t do anything with a finger on a 20-kilo granite rock,'” Eriksson said Thursday night, according to The Athletic, in Toronto at Rock League, the world’s first professional curling league.

“But when it’s moving, it’s quite easy to give it a small push, and you can actually change the angle quite a bit more than the speed. So [Swedish media] wanted to see how big of a difference you can make with just a small touch with the finger.”

Eriksson was alluding toa videorecently circulated by Swedish media outlet SVT that shows him demonstrating and explaining how a double-touch violation can, in his eyes, be unfairly used as a corrective measure to influence the path of a stone on the ice upon a thrower’s initial release.

By rule,as clarified mid-Olympics by World Curling on Feb. 14, players can retouch the handle of a stone as many times as they want prior to the hog line — the boundary before which the thrower must release the stone for it to be considered in play — but touching the handle after the hog line isn’t allowed and should result in the stone being removed from play. A stone should also be removed from play if a player touches the granite of the stone during forward motion, rather than the handle.

World Curling introduced electronic handles on the stones at this year's Games. Triggered by a touch sensor, as well as a magnetic strip in the ice, they were designed to flash red if players were still touching the handle after the hog line.

Touching the granite beyond the hog line, though, wouldn’t activate that mechanism.

Brad Jacobs, the Canadian skip on Kennedy’s team that won Olympic gold, is frustrated, too, but that frustration is directed toward the Swedes.

“Something needs to happen here,” Jacobs said this week, per The Athletic. “There needs to be accountability. Everything that happened at the Olympics with this controversy was not handled properly, starting from the top down.”

As for the Swedish team specifically, Jacobs reportedly told The Athletic, “They’re nothing to me.”

“It’s quite simple, I act like they don’t exist. I’m very unhappy with all of their actions and things they’ve done recently.”

That said, while Canada was at the top of the podium in this year’s Games, Sweden won gold in the World Curling Championship. Team Edin, which is skipped by Niklas Edin and also includes Eriksson among the quartet, defeated a Canadian squad skipped by Matt Dunstone in the final.

Before that, Team Dunstone beat Team Jacobs in the the Canadian national championship, denying Team Jacobs a spot in the world championships.

The rivalry could be a good thing for curling. Some bad blood can go a long way in terms of a sport’s popularity.

Especially one like curling that’s struggled to stay in the zeitgeist outside the Olympic window.

A country-by-country glance at Pope Leo XIV's trip to Africa

Pope Leo XIV’s four-nation, 11-daytrip to Africais so dizzying in its complexity it recalls some of the globetrotting odysseys of St. John Paul II in his early years.

Vatican-Africa

Themes Leo is expected to raise include Christian-Muslim coexistence, the over-exploitation of the region's natural and human resources, corruption and migration.

Here’s a country-by-country look at each destination and highlights of the itinerary:

ALGERIA: April 13-15

TheAlgeriastop clearly carries the most personal importance for Leo, given histies to St. Augustine, the inspiration of his religious order who lived and died there. Leo will visit Annaba, the modern-day Hippo where the 5th century saint was a bishop.

Migration and Christian-Muslim coexistence are expected to be other top themes in Algeria, a former French colony which is a majority Sunni Muslim nation on North Africa’s Mediterranean coast. Leo will pay homage to migrants killed in shipwrecks trying to reach Europe and will visit the Great Mosque in Algiers.

Last year, Algerian legislators voted todeclare France’s colonizationof the North African country a crime, approving a law that calls for restitution of property taken by France during its 130-year rule, among other demands seeking to redress historical wrongs.

CAMEROON: April 15-18

One of the highlights of Leo’s visit to Cameroon will be a “peace meeting” he will lead in the north-west city of Bamenda on April 16, featuring testimony of a Mankon traditional chief, a Presbyterian moderator, an imam and a Catholic nun.

Cameroon’s western regions have beenplagued by fightingsince English-speaking separatists launched a rebellion in 2017 with the stated goal of breaking away from the French-speaking majority and establishing an independent English-speaking state. The conflict has killedmore than 6,000 people and displaced over 600,000 others, according to the International Crisis Group, a think tank.

The country is also plagued by fighting involving Boko Haram militants in the north, as the Islamic extremist group’s insurgency in neighboring Nigeria has spilled over into Cameroon.

Cameroon sits atop significant reserves of oil, natural gas, cobalt, bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamonds. The extractive sector accounts for nearly a third of the country’s exports, according to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

But rights groups and the Catholic Church have raised alarms that revenues from extraction rarely reach the rural and indigenous communities that live closest to mining and drilling operations, while foreign companies and a small national elite capture most of the profits.

While French and English companies have long dominated the extraction industry in Cameroon, Chinese companies have moved heavily into the country in recent years, particularly in the gold mining regions of the east.

Last year, United Nations experts reported severe human rights and environmental harms resulting from mercury use in gold mining operations in eastern Cameroon.

The gold mining rush in eastern Cameroon has also led hundreds of children to abandon school to dig for gold, risking their lives at makeshift mines for a dollar’s worth of ore sold on the local black market, according to UNICEF.

ANGOLA: April 18-21

In Angola, where around 58% of the population is Catholic, Leo will pray at the Sanctuary of Mama Muxima, a Marian shrine that has become one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Angola.

The church was first built around the end of the 16th century by the Portuguese after they established a fortress at Muxima. It became a key point in the Portuguese trans-Atlantic human trade as a place where enslaved people were baptized before they were sent on ships to the Americas.

Angola today is the fourth largest oil producer in Africa and among the world’s top 20 producers, according to the International Energy Agency. It’s also the world’s third biggest diamond producer and has significant deposits of gold and highly sought after critical minerals.

But despite its varied natural resources, the World Bank estimated in 2023 that more than 30% of the population lived on less than $2.15 a day.

The country of around 38 million gained independence from Portugal in 1975, but still bears the scars of a devastating civil war that began straight after independence and raged on and off for 27 years before finally ending in 2002. More than half a million people are believed to have been killed.

In Angola, Leo will address young people especially to offer a message of hope and healing, the Vatican said.

EQUATORIAL GUINEA: April 21-23

The discovery of offshore oil in the mid-1990s transformed Equatorial Guinea’s economy virtually overnight, with oil now accounting for almost half of its GDP and more than 90% of exports, according to the African Development Bank.

Yet more than half of the authoritarian petrostate’s population still live in poverty, the World Bank reported last year.

The former Spanish colony is run by Africa’s longest-serving president, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been in power since 1979 and is accused ofwidespread corruption and authoritarianism.

Several rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, have documented how revenues have enriched the ruling Obiang family rather than the broader population, where at least 70% of the country’s nearly 2 million people live in poverty.

The country’s government also facesrampant accusationsof harassment, arrest and intimidation of political opponents, critics and journalists.

In addition to the negative impacts of the extraction industries, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said Leo would raise issues of corruption and the proper role of governing authorities during the trip.

Union Berlin appoints history-maker Marie-Louise Eta as head coach

In a history-making move, Union Berlin has appointed Marie-Louise Eta as head coach through the rest of the season.

USA TODAY Sports

Eta, 34, will become the first woman to coach a men's team in one of Europe's top-five leagues (England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France).

The Bundesliga club fired Steffen Baumgart on Saturday night, just hours after a 3-1 loss to Heidenheim.

Union Berlin immediately replaced Baumgart with Eta, who will fill in as an interim before taking charge of Union Berlin's women's team ahead of next season.

"We have had a hugely disappointing second half of the season so far and will not allow ourselves to be blinded by our league position," Union's director of men's professional football Horst Heldt said in a statement. "Our situation remains precarious and we urgently need points to secure our place in the league.

"Two wins from 14 matches since the winter break and the performances shown in recent weeks do not give us the confidence that we can still turn things around with the current set-up. We have therefore decided to make a fresh start. I am delighted that Marie-Louise Eta has agreed to take on this role on an interim basis before becoming head coach of the women's professional team in the summer as planned."

Eta has already made history in the 2023-24 season, when she became the first woman to serve as an assistant coach in the men's Bundesliga with Union Berlin.

During that season, Eta filled in for head coach Nenad Bjelica when he was suspended for three games, becoming the first woman to manage a game in the men's Bundesliga.

"Given the point gaps in the bottom half of the table, staying in the Bundesliga is not yet guaranteed. I'm delighted that the club has entrusted me with this challenging task. One of Union's strengths has always been our ability to pull together in such situations. And of course, I'm convinced that we'll get the crucial points with this team," Eta said.

Injured Carlos Ulberg pulls off improbable title victory

The dawn of a new era at light heavyweight commenced Saturday night in Miami in the main event of UFC 327, which saw Carlos Ulberg win the UFC vacant light heavyweight title over former champion Jiri Prochazka.

Field Level Media

Ulberg (14-1) finished Prochazka (32-6-1) after nearly losing the fight due to a knee injury, catching Prochazka coming in with a left hook, followed by strikes, to win the title.

Ulberg has won 10 in a row, whereas Prochazka fell to 1-3 in UFC title fights since June 2022. Two of those losses were to Alex Pereira (13-3).

In the co-headliner, Paulo Costa rallied in the third round to halt Azamat Murzakanov's undefeated record. Costa (16-4) has won his last two fights as he used to fight primarily at middleweight. Murzakanov (16-1) had won five of his first seven fights in the UFC by KO/TKO dating to 2022.

At heavyweight, Josh Hokit remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision win over Curtis Blaydes in a highly entertaining fight that was primarily a striking clinic. Hokit (9-0) took the cards 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 to run his record to 3-0 in the UFC. Blaydes (19-6) has dropped two of his last three.

Hokit will make a quick turnaround, competing on the UFC Freedom 250 card June 14 in Washington, D.C., vs. Derrick Lewis (29-13, 1 NC), a late addition to make the event a seven-fight card.

At light heavyweight, Dominick Reyes earned a split decision against Johnny Walker, taking two of the three judges' scorecards 29-28, while another scored the opposite for Walker. Reyes (16-5) has won four of his last five fights, whereas Walker (22-10) is the direct inverse.

Former WEC veteran Cub Swanson ended his UFC career on a high note, knocking out Nate Landwehr with a right hook at 4:06 into the opening round. Swanson (31-14) closed his MMA journey with three wins in his last four fights, while Landwehr (18-8) has lost three in a row.

The Mavericks pulled within 110-107 on John Poulakidas' 3-pointer with 1:08 left and had a chance to get even closer on their next possession but Oso Ighodaro blocked Moussa Cisse at the rim to stop the rally.

Brooks made a driving layup with 13.7 seconds to finally put the game away. The Suns clinched the No. 7 spot in the Western Conference playoff race, meaning they get two chances at home to win one game in the play-in tournament.

Poulakidas — a 6-foot-5 undrafted rookie who played at Yale — scored a season-high 23 points. Rookie of the Year front-runner Cooper Flagg had a tough game, scoring 11 points on 4 of 19 shooting.

The Mavericks trailed 71-53 early in the third quarter but used an 18-1 run to get back into the game. Dallas took its first lead of the second half when Max Christie hit a 3-pointer for a 95-93 advantage with 8:16 left.

The Suns responded with a 9-0 run and didn't trail again. Dallas had just 10 available players because of injuries.

It was a potentially costly win for the Suns. Guards Jalen Green (right knee) and Jordan Goodwin (left ankle) left the game in the first half and didn't return, though both players were out on the court at halftime going through warmups.

Green has been limited to 32 games this season because of injuries, mostly due to his hamstring.

Suns rookie Khaman Maluach — the No. 10 overall pick out of Duke — got his first start of the season and finished with a season-high 14 rebounds. The 7-foot-1 center stuffed his college teammate Flagg on a dunk attempt in the fourth quarter.

Trump's Treasury boss visits NY diner, downplays gas-price surge as 'blip'

YORKTOWN, NY − On aday reporting historic increases in gas prices and rising inflation,President Donald Trump’s Treasury secretary downplayed rising costs while promoting tax policies in suburban New York.

USA TODAY

Scott Bessent, head of the U.S. Treasury Department, on Friday, April 10, visited a diner in a Hudson Valley swing district about 40 miles north of New York City alongsideembattled Rep. Mike Lawler, R-New York.

Bessent's tour in northern Westchester County, intended to tout the Trump administration’s economic policies in a district key to keeping GOP control of Congress, came the same day as Trump’s worst inflation report in his second term. It also comes amid thehighest monthly gas price increasesin recorded history, 21.2%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A rainbow is seen above the White House in Washington, DC on April 1, 2026. US President Donald Trump will deliver a prime-time address on April 1, 2026 on the Iran war in the face of plunging approval ratings, economic jitters and spiralling diplomatic fallout.

Rather than discussing economic fallout from the U.S.-Israelwar in Iran, Bessent talked with residents and small business owners on the administration's policies, highlighting tax breaks, investment accounts for young children, and no taxes on tips for certain workers under thefederal tax and spending bill. Before a diner roundtable with residents, Bessent touredRegeneron, a biotech firm, where he addressed rising costs withCBS News New York.

“This is a temporary blip from the one-time increase in gasoline prices,” he said. “If you look at the futures market, we’re going to get on the other side of this.”

Bessent didn’t speak to press at the event.

Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, left, and Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) along with local business owners attend an economic roundtable at Hill Blvd Diner on Friday, April 10, 2026. The visit is to highlight the impact of pro-growth economic policies on New York businesses, including the benefits of the Working Families Tax Cuts Act for the 17th District.

At the Hill Blvd Diner, in Yorktown, Bessent and Lawler celebrated thestate and local tax, or SALT, deduction for residents in high-taxed New York, which has been a sticking point for Lawler and other vulnerable House Republicans in Democratic states. Twenty salt shakers were placed around a U-shaped roundtable, with press viewing the gathering.

Latest Consumer Price Index data released on April 10 revealed gas prices in March spiked a record 21.2%, the largest monthly increase record collection began in 1967. Gas prices over the year are up 18.9%.

Meanwhile, consumer prices rose 3.3% year-over-year in March, the largest increase since in two years, but it was still far less than inflation surges in 2022, under former PresidentJoe Biden, a Democrat.

In the latest report, gas prices accounted for nearly three quarters of increases in all monthly items. Consumer confidence is also dipping as wages aren’t keeping up with costs.

Four years earlier, Lawler, a former state assemblyman, waselected when Republicanstook back control of the House. Similar to many GOP candidates,Lawler won in parton campaigning against record inflation under Biden.Lawler narrowly beatthe then-top ranking Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who ran the powerful Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

In 2026, Lawler faces a tough re-election as Democrats set their sights on his suburban district.

“Obviously the situation in the Middle East has created some volatility in the oil markets, which have driven up costs,” he told reporters, adding that, prior to the conflict, gas prices were down below $3 a gallon for the first time in years.

“The volatility that we're experiencing right now because of the situation in the Middle East is going to come to an end,” he said.

He added the United States is not reliant on Iranian petroleum, nor as reliant on Middle Eastern oil, but there is domestic production. But Lawler, who has supported Trump’s military operations, said he expected prices to immediately come down when theStrait of Hormuzreopens, which is now being tolled by Iran as the Trump administration tries to negotiate a resolution amid a two-week ceasefire.

In recent months, Lawler has had several high-profile visits from senior cabinet officials. The Journal News/lohud.com, part of the USA TODAY Network, reportedEnergy Secretary Chris Wright,Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet OzandKelly Loeffler, who heads the Small Business Administration, all visited Lawler in the district.

While Bessent didn’t address rising costs, local representatives mentioned it to the federal officials.

“Our people are suffering,” said Brendel Logan, deputy supervisor in Ramapo, located in Rockland County, also part of Lawler’s district. Logan, a Democrat, supported Lawler for his bipartisanship. Yet she called on colleagues locally and in Washington, DC, to address costs for businesses and on elderly people.

State Assemblyman Matt Slater, a Republican, said the area was facing an “affordability crisis.” He supported the federal GOP policies to get reduce tax burdens in an already taxed state.

“These are the policies that we need to put … money back into people’s pockets, not more government, more taxes, more spending, where people continue to feel crushed by an overbearing government,” he said.

Claire Kerrigan, a bartender in Yorktown, told Lawler and Bessent she appreciated no taxes on her tips. The policy allows her to go out and spend more and not feel the need to put extra money aside for her property taxes or other costs.

But with rising costs, she said she’s prepared for it.

“You buckle up,” Kerrigan said. “You cut back. When you see something on sale, you buy three of them instead of one.”

A further two people were wounded in the attack on the Black Sea port city, when drones hit a residential area, damaging apartment buildings, houses and a kindergarten.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia targeted Ukraine with 160 drones overnight, of which 133 were shot down or intercepted, hours before a proposed Easter ceasefire was due to come into force.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said 99 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight across Russia and occupied Crimea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday declared a 32-hour ceasefire over the Orthodox Easter weekend, ordering Russian forces to halt hostilities from 4 p.m. Saturday until the end of Sunday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Friday Ukraine is ready to mirror any ceasefire steps, having earlier proposed to Russia apause in attackson each other’senergy infrastructureover the Orthodox Easter holiday.

Previous ceasefire attempts have had little impact, with both sides accusing each other of violations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday described Putin’s move as a “humanitarian” gesture, but said Moscow remains focused on a comprehensive settlement based on its longstanding demands — a key sticking point that has prevented the two sides from reaching an agreement.

A possible prisoner exchange over the Easter holiday has also been discussed.

Russia’s human rights ombudswoman Tatyana Moskalkova said last week that both sides were working on exchanges of prisoners.

Periodic prisoner exchanges have been one of the few positive outcomes of otherwise fruitless monthslongU.S.-brokered negotiationsbetween Moscow and Kyiv. The talks have delivered no progress on key issues preventing an end toRussia’s invasionof its neighbor, now in its fifth year.
