LeBron James nets 28 as Lakers grab 2-0 lead on Rockets

LeBron James compiled 28 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 101-94 victory over the visiting Houston Rockets to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series on Tuesday.

With leading scorers Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) watching from the bench, Marcus Smart added 25 points, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, and Game 1 hero Luke Kennard contributed 23 points, which included 3 of 6 from deep.

"Just as hard as we played in Game 1, we had to double that in Game 2," James said. "We understood what they wanted to come in (with), the desperation they were going to have, so we had to be even more desperate. And I thought we played a hell of a game."

Kevin Durant, who missed the opening game with a right knee contusion, scored 23 points for Houston, but he had nine turnovers and was held to just three points after halftime.

Houston's Alperen Sengun paired 20 points with 11 rebounds, Jabari Smith Jr. had 18 points and Amen Thompson posted 16 points and nine assists.

After the Rockets held a 16-12 lead midway through the first quarter, Los Angeles hit back, closing the quarter with a 9-0 rush to lead 33-26.

Durant showed no signs of being hampered by his knee, playing all 12 minutes and scoring 11 points.

At the other end, Smart (14 points) and Kennard (10 points) hurt Houston from the perimeter, combining to hit five 3-pointers in the opening quarter.

The Lakers' lead swelled to 46-31 before Durant led a 17-3 Rockets run to trim that margin to 49-48.

Durant had 20 points on 6-of-7 shooting at the half, but Los Angeles still held sway 54-51.

Houston briefly captured the lead in the third period before the Lakers used a 13-4 burst -- highlighted by a spectacular reverse dunk from 41-year-old James after he blew by Durant -- to pull ahead 67-59.

With Durant held to just one unsuccessful shot attempt in 10 minutes of action for the quarter, the Rockets struggled offensively, outscored 21-17 for the period, as Los Angeles led 75-68 with one quarter to play.

Josh Okogie's 3-pointer with 6:38 remaining in the fourth cut the gap to 85-82, but it was as close as Houston would get down the stretch.

With the Lakers up 97-92, Durant's ninth turnover led to a powerful James dunk with 55.3 seconds left before Kennard sealed it from the stripe.

"The turnovers hurt us, but outside of the third quarter, (we were) decent overall," Rockets coach Ime Udoka said. "But 7-for-29 from three, 8-for-20 on second-chance points, and shooting 40% is not good enough ... (We're) defending well enough, but not scoring. That's the bottom line from these two games."

The best-of-seven series shifts to Houston for Game 3 on Friday.

Shohei Ohtani is making history: What current on-base streak means

Shohei Ohtani is closing in on history.

USA TODAY Sports

TheLos Angeles Dodgers' two-way phenom singled into right field off of Colorado Rockies starter José Quintana in the third inning on Monday night at Coors Field to extend his on-base streak to 52 games. Now, Ohtani enters Tuesday's away series opener against the archrival San Francisco Giants with the opportunity to tie Shawn Green — who reached base safely in 53 consecutive games in 2000 — for second place on the Dodgers' all-time on-base streak list (since 1900).

If Ohtani ties Green with a hit, walk, or hit-by-pitch in any of his plate appearances on Tuesday, he'd be five games away from the franchise record, which belongs to Hall of Famer Duke Snider. He got on base in 58 straight games in the 1954 season.

Ohtani's streak began back on Aug. 24, 2025. In that time, he's slashed .280/.402/.590 with 56 hits, 16 home runs, 39 walks and three HBPs. He passed “Wee” Willie Keeler (1900-1901) on Sunday to move into third place in the Dodgers' record book after breaking into the top five by surpassing Ron Cey's mark of 47 consecutive games from 1975-76 earlier in the season. On April 10, Ohtani's streak reached 44 games, moving him past Ichiro Suzuki for the longest on-base streak by a Japanese-born player.

“It's a tremendous streak," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters. "It's hard to get on base, certainly when everyone's trying to target you. This streak is one of the great ones, and hopefully he can keep it going.”

At least 25 dead in powerful explosion at fireworks factory in southern India

At least 25 workers, most of them women, were killed in anexplosion at a fireworks factoryin southern India’sTamil Nadu stateon Sunday, authorities said.

The Independent US

The blast tore through the factory near Kattanarpatti village in Virudhunagar at around 3.20pm. There were nearly 100 people on site at the Vanaja Fireworks unit when the explosion occurred. The workers were reportedly mixing chemicals, police said.

The force of the blast and the ensuing fire flattened at least four sheds, sending plumes of smoke 50ft into the air.

“The explosion was so powerful that three rooms were reduced to rubble and several adjacent structures were also damaged,” a police officer said.

District collector N O Sukhapatra said rescue crews had recovered 23 bodies from the rubble and that six injured workers were being treated at a local government hospital, four of them in critical condition.

A second explosion later in the evening, triggered as rescue workers were clearing the rubble with an earthmover, injured 17 people, including six policemen and four firemen.

Officials said the factory appeared to be operating in violation of multiple safety norms despite holding a licence.

“The factory was not supposed to function on a Sunday. We will initiate stern action after a detailed inquiry,” Mr Sukhapatra said, adding that the licence would be cancelled.

The owner, the wife of a former village council head, is reportedly absconding.

Police said they filed a complaint against the factory owner and foreman and launched a manhunt for them.

Further violations were alleged by the Firecrackers and Matchbox Manufacturers Association district president PN Deva, who said the unit was permitted to employ only 25 workers but many more were present at the time of the blast.

He said regulations restricted chemical mixing to between 8am and 10am, yet the explosion occurred hours later, suggesting operations continued throughout the day.

Many bodies were charred beyond recognition and some remained to be unidentified.

A family member of a victim told the news agency ANI that she lost both her father and mother in the accident. “We have nothing else to do except deal with this loss,” she said.

Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin described the deaths as “tragic” and expressed “immense sorrow” in a post on X.

Prime ministerNarendra Modi, in a social media post, extended his “condolences to those who have lost their loved ones” and called it a “deeply distressing” incident.

"The loss of lives in a tragic accident at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district, TN, is deeply distressing. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” president Droupadi Murmu said.

Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar–Sivakasi belt is widely regarded as India’s fireworks hub, supplying a large share of the country’s crackers and employing thousands in small, often family-run units.

The industry has long been plagued by safety concerns, with accidents occurring regularly due to lapses in handling volatile chemicals and overcrowded workplaces.

One of the deadliest incidents, the Sivakasi fireworks factory explosion in 2012, killed more than 40 people and injured dozens, highlighting persistent failures in enforcing safety regulations.
