Could the UK lose the Falklands after leaked memo says US may withdraw support?

TheUKhas reaffirmed itssovereignty over the Falkland Islandsafter a memo leaked from Washington indicated that the US could withdraw its support.

The Independent US

A leaked internal Pentagon email suggested Washington could review its position on Britain’s claim to the islands as part of a wider punishment for Nato alliesnot showing support for the US war in Iran.

US president Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised Nato for a lack of support since he launched his offensive in the Middle East, threatening to withdraw altogether as he branded the alliance a “paper tiger”.

The confidential memo, which also considers suspending Spain from the alliance, floats the idea of reassessing Washington’s diplomatic support for European “imperial possessions”, such as theFalklands.

A spokesperson for British prime minister Sir Keir Starmer reaffirmed the UK’ssovereigntyover the islands: “We could not be clearer about the UK’s position on the Falkland Islands. It is long-standing, it is unchanged.

“Sovereignty rests with the UK and the islands’ right to self-determination is paramount. It’s been our consistent position and will remain the case,” the spokesperson said, adding that Britain had expressed that position “clearly and consistently to successive US administrations”.

More than 3,600 people reside in the Falkland Islands, a small archipelago in the South Atlantic, per the 2021 census.Argentinainvaded and occupied the the islands for 10 weeks in 1982 after long-running negotiations with Great Britain collapsed over their ownership. The Reagan administration publicly supported Britain through the conflict.

Experts have toldThe Independentthat losing US support for British sovereigntywould have no impact in practical terms.

Admiral Lord West of Spithead – the commanding officer of HMSArdent, a frigate that was sunk in theFalklands War– said that militarily, losing US support for British sovereignty would have “no impact”.

“The recognition or otherwise by the US does not make the islands less secure,” the former Royal Navy commander-in-chief added.

Philip Ingram MBE, a former army colonel, toldThe Independentthat Washington’s withdrawal of support could not undermine international law – and the will of the Falkland citizens.

Argentine president Javier Milei has repeatedly claimed sovereignty over the islands (Reuters)

“Under international law the fate of the Falklands is down to the will of its people, no matter what Trump says – so their sovereignty is not under any threat,” he said.

“Argentina is many, many years off developing a capability that could threaten the Falklands and the small force the UK has there could be reinforced quickly even given the pressures on our armed forces. This is simply Trump clickbaiting and nothing else.”

A senior research fellow from RUSI, Dr Carlos Solar, added that the memo was more indicative of a breakdown in the “special relationship” than an active threat.

"The idea of the US not supporting British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands does not add much to the issue itself, but rather it speaks badly about how the ‘special relationship’ is being handled and what Washington is willing to put in the negotiating table when asking for more UK support towards American geopolitical ambitions,” he said.

“There is no active military threat from Argentina nor there is an adversarial position from the UK towards Buenos Aires from their military personnel stationed in the Falkland Islands. The Argentine claim will be perpetual and shouldn’t surprise the British public opinion every time someone puts it on the table. Both countries, though have taken measures to improve their bilateral matters such as in trade, science, industry, and education, despite their totally unshakable positions to the sovereignty question."

Questions have amped up around UK sovereignty over the Falklands since Argentine president Javier Milei took office in 2023. The populist leader, who has a strong relationship with the US president, has repeatedly claimed Argentine sovereignty over the islands.

President Milei said earlier this month: “I wish to reaffirm our right to the full exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces,” according to South Atlantic news agencyMercoPress.

Residents of the Falklands Islands voted overwhelmingly in favour of remaining a UK overseas territory during a sovereignty referendum in 2013.

Of 1,517 votes cast in the two-day referendum – on a turnout of more than 90 per cent – just three votes were against.

In a speech marking the 44th anniversary of the 1982 conflict, President Milei said that the war “did not alter the legal nature of this dispute, which continues to be recognised by the United Nations as a special and particular colonial situation that must be resolved through mature and sincere dialogue between Argentina and the United Kingdom”.

Dr Solar added: “Relations between the US and Argentina are at a peak which serves well both countries in the short term. Argentina gets financial aid support, and Washington secures a partner in southern tip of the Western Hemisphere, a strategic gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and with access to Antarctica, much sought after by the US’s adversaries such as China.”

A total of 255 British Armed Forces personnel and 649 Argentine military personnel were killed during the Falklands War, which ended after 74 days when Argentina surrendered control back to Britain. Argentina has still not been able to rebuild its navy.

The Falkland Islands have been underBritish administration since 1833, but Argentina has long disputed this claim. The islands were believed to have been uninhabited prior to European discovery in the 17th century.

In 1765, British captain John Byron claimed the islands for Britain. Various French, British, Spanish and Argentine settlements existed on the islands prior to the UK re-establishing its sovereignty.

While it appears that Washington’s potential threat could have no real impact on the sovereignty of the Falklands, it does indicate a further deterioration in relations between the UK and the US.

President Trump said on Thursday that King Charles’s state trip at the end of this month could help repair strained relations after criticising Sir Keir Starmer as weak and indecisive.

Asked about his intervention and whether the pair can fix their relationship, Mr Trump said: “If he opened the North Sea and if his immigration policies became strong, which right now they’re not, he can recover, but if he doesn’t, I don’t think he has a chance.”

Cubs' Michael Conforto gets his 2025 World Series ring from the Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) —Michael Confortoenjoyed a highlight before the Chicago Cubs opened a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.

Mets Cubs Baseball

The Cubs' backup outfielder was visited by his former Dodgers teammates who brought quite a gift — a 2025 World Series ring. The Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays in seven games to win a second straight championship.

“Opening it, putting it on — one of the coolest moments in my baseball career, for sure,” Conforto said. “Right up there with dogpiling after Game 7.”

Conforto struggled mightily with the Dodgers, batting a career-worst .199 with 121 strikeouts playing on a $17 million, one-year deal. He didn't make the postseason roster and the team later let his contract expire.

But all that was forgotten during the brief pregame reunion.

“Really cool to see all the guys and just have them be excited for me to get my ring,” he said.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, “I will definitely find Michael and congratulate him. I know he didn’t perform the way that people would have liked and he would have liked, but I loved him on the team. I loved what he brought to the Dodgers."

Conforto showed the gaudy ring that contains another ring inside it and the box featuring video highlights of the 2025 season to a couple teammates at his locker in the visiting clubhouse.

“It’s totally the way L.A. does it. That’s how they do things, different and grand,” he said. “It’s really cool that they put a second ring in there so you can wear it a little bit more low-key.”

There was nothing low-key aboutConforto's time in Los Angeles. Agitated fans practically begged Roberts to leave him out of the lineup, but Conforto appeared in 138 games, mostly in left field. He had 36 RBIs, 56 walks and a .638 OPS.

“Naturally, I wanted to go over there and slug with the superstars,” he said of being on a team with Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, among others. “I put my energy in a place that kind of put me at a disadvantage. Those are good lessons to bring with me and things I think about a lot.”

Conforto signed a minor-league dealwith the Cubs and made the opening day roster. He's hitting .304 in 23 at-bats, with seven hits, five RBIs, seven walks and 10 strikeouts.

His disappointing year in Los Angeles taught Conforto an important lesson about priorities.

“My focus needed to be on moving runners, having good at bats, getting guys in from third with less than two outs, the little baseball things, and less about having a big swing, hitting the homer,” he said. “Those things happen organically. When you’re going out there and trying to do it, it’s going to be really hard for you.”

Conforto credits Roberts for backing him while at the same time telling him the truth.

“He stuck with me for a long time and continued to be positive with me. At the same time, he was real honest about what he needed to see from me and that’s all you can ask for as a player,” Conforto said. “It helped pull me out of the huge slump that I was in and I made myself valuable enough to keep around. I owe that to him for sticking with me.”

His mother, Tracie Ruiz-Conforto, won two gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, when artistic swimming made its Olympic debut.

“Finally have something that is on the same level,” Conforto said, “but she’s got two gold, so I got to get another ring.”

Trump hosts crypto contest winners at Mar-a-Lago as his coin languishes

By Michelle Conlin

Reuters

NEW YORK, April 25 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host winners of his second annual meme coin contest at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday, offering top buyers of his $TRUMP cryptocurrency an audience with him even as the ‌token's value has plunged 96% from its peak last year.

The gala will take place as scrutiny of the Trump family’s broader crypto ventures has intensified, ‌with Democratic leaders calling for investigations.

The 297 largest $TRUMP token holders who registered for the contest will attend a gathering that Trump has billed the "most exclusive" crypto and business conference in the world, where he will give the keynote address. The top 29 also will attend a “special VIP reception and champagne toast” with the president.

The day-long event is the latest example of Trump blending presidential stature with his family’s growing portfolio of speculative crypto ventures - a convergence government ethics experts say has little modern precedent, particularly since Trump's personal crypto wealth has ballooned as he reshapes U.S. crypto policy.

While many retail buyers who piled into the token around its launch have seen most of their paper gains disappear, the Trump family and affiliated ‌entities have continued to profit from the broader crypto ecosystem.

A Reuters examination found that the family has taken in more than $1 billion from crypto asset sales, including at least $336 million tied to meme-coin sales in the first half of 2025 alone, with potentially billions more in unrealized gains.

“President Trump’s assets are in a trust managed by his children," White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Reuters, adding that the president only acts in the best interests of the American public. "There are no conflicts of interest."

Last year’s meme coin contest, at his golf club near Washington, D.C., raised similar concerns for ethics experts, as did a February conference at Mar-a-Lago hosted by the president’s sons, Eric and Don Jr., for World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s most lucrative crypto venture, which drew top figures from Washington, D.C. and Wall Street.

Contest rankings were based not ‌only on holdings of $TRUMP but also on purchases of Trump-branded merchandise - including sneakers, watches and fragrances - between March 12 and April 14. Winners are set to receive Trump-branded items including a commemorative poster, two trading cards, a "Fight Fight Fight Red Beauty" watch and a fragrance.

$TRUMP TOKEN NEAR LOWS

The $TRUMP token is hovering near its all-time lows. When the contest closed earlier this month, $TRUMP closed at $2.81, down steeply from the $75 all-time high shortly after it was introduced in January 2025.

The 297 qualifying winners hold roughly $29 million worth of $TRUMP, according to crypto analytics firm Nansen, far below the $148 million Reuters reported they held for the inaugural May 2025 contest.

"The contrast with last year's launch is stark," ‌according to a Nansen analysis prepared for Reuters. When it was launched, buyers accumulated and held the token, helping fuel a sustained rally, Nansen said. "The 2026 contest generated a moment of activity, but not the same conviction we saw in 2025. Demand just isn’t sticking.”

Meme coins - a type of crypto with no utility or intrinsic value - are based on online trends and viral cultural phenomena. Most ‌of them exhibit parabolic price curves, with a rise in the early stage often followed by a plunge in value.

Among the top $TRUMP wallets, according to blockchain data, is one linked to crypto billionaire Justin Sun, who finished first in the contest for the second consecutive year.

Sun, one of the largest publicly known investors in World Liberty, sued the company on Tuesday, alleging that it froze his holdings. Investors have grown frustrated with the venture, saying it is opaque, tightly ‌controlled and unresponsive to complaints.

In a social media post, World Liberty co-founder and CEO Zach Witkoff, the son of Trump administration special envoy Steve Witkoff, called the lawsuit “meritless,” and accused Sun of “misconduct that required World Liberty to take action to protect itself and its users."

Sun did not respond to a request for comment.

Love partnered with Sharpie to release a limited-edition comic book hours before the draft titled “Jeremonstar: Draft Day Ashcan” with the story of his football journey. Love showed up on the red carpet with one of the characters emblazoned on the inside of his suit jacket.

“This is the biggest stage of my life so far so I want to make sure I'm ready for it,”Love said.

Miami offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa went even bolder with artwork across the back of the jacket covering his massive back tohonor his American Samoan culture. He said Samoan culture built him and the least he could do was to give back to his community by representing them on this stage.

“This is the ulafala, and it represents the high chief or the high monarch,” Mauigoa said. “And it's part of our culture and obviously my dad is a chief. So in the back it's a little painting that kind of oversees the whole idea of the American Samoan community.”

Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback who led Indiana to a national championship, wasn't at the draft. Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is attending, and he went with a classic suit with white shirt. His teammate, offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor, took a different approach with dental jewelry he showed off on the red carpet.

Scientists trace 11 billion year old comet’s home to a mystery cold corner of the Milky Way

An ancient comet, 3I/Atlas, which journeyed through our solar system last year, is believed to have originated in a remarkably cold and isolated region of the galaxy, predating the formation of its own star system.

The Independent US This photo provided by Gianluca Masi shows the interstellar comet 3I/Atlas as it streaks through space, 190 million miles from Earth, on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, seen from Manciano, Italy (Local Library)

This celestial wanderer is only the third confirmed interstellar visitor and potentially the oldest, with scientists estimating its age at up to 11 billion years – more than twice that of our sun.

Researchers, led by the University of Michigan, used the ALMA observatory in Chile to study the comet last autumn. Their findings, published inNature Astronomy, reveal exceptionally high levels of deuterium, or heavy hydrogen, in the comet's water.

This suggests an origin in an environment significantly colder than our cosmic neighbourhood, existing even before its host star began to form, according to Teresa Paneque-Carreno of the University of Michigan. She noted that while our sun was likely surrounded by other nascent stars, this comet's parent star may have been more isolated, leading to less heating and persistently colder conditions.

3I/Atlas (Gianluca Masi)

Discovered last summer, the comet offered NASA and the European Space Agency ample time to observe it with multiple space telescopes as it passed Mars in October and made its closest approach to Earth in December. It is now well beyond Jupiter, embarking on its permanent departure from our solar system, remaining visible only to professional astronomers.

The comet's precise place of origin is still unknown. Observations by theHubble Space Telescopeput the size of its nucleus somewhere between a quarter-mile and 3.5 miles (440 meters and 5.6 kilometers). It's hurtling away at 137,000 mph (220,000 kph).

Linking all these “puzzle pieces together may give an idea to how the planet-forming conditions were at these early times,” Paneque-Carreno said in an email.

The first known interstellar object to stray into our celestial backyard —Oumuamua— was discovered by a telescope inHawaiiin 2017. Comet 2I/Borisov followed in 2019, named for the Crimean amateur astronomer who first spotted it.

Netanyahu says he was successfully treated for prostate cancer

TEL AVIV, April 24 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Friday that he had ‌received successful treatment for early-stage prostate cancer, without ‌specifying when the treatment took place.

Reuters

In a statement on social media, as his annual medical report was released, Netanyahu, 76, said an early stage malignant tumor had been discovered during a routine checkup. He said "targeted treatment" had removed "the problem" ‌and left no trace of it.

According to the medical report, which otherwise said the prime minister was in good health, Netanyahu was treated with radiation therapy for early-stage prostate cancer. Neither the medical report nor Netanyahu said when the treatment occurred.

Israel's longest-serving prime minister said that he ‌had delayed the release of the medical report by two months to prevent Iran from spreading "false propaganda against Israel".

In March, during the fighting with Iran, rumors that circulated on social media and aired on Iranian state media ‌claimed that Netanyahu had died. The Israeli leader recorded a video of himself visiting a Jerusalem cafe in March to refute the ‌claims.

Netanyahu underwent surgery on his prostate in 2024 after he was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection resulting from a benign prostate enlargement. In 2023, he was ‌fitted with a pacemaker. Elections are due to be held in Israel by October.

It is not clear if the Chelsea player will recover in time for the tournament that runs through June and July.

Chelsea interim coach Calum McFarlane did not give a timeframe for Estevao's recovery after he sustained the injury in the first half of last week's game against Manchester United.

“Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season because he is going to be out for a little bit of time. That's really unfortunate, especially for someone so young and so talented," McFarlane said. "I am sure he is very hopeful he can make the World Cup, but I don’t know on that.”

The 19-year-old Estevao was taken off after 16 minutes of the 1-0 loss at Stamford Bridge and missed Tuesday's 3-0 defeat at Brighton.

Estevao joined Chelsea from Palmeiras last year and has scored eight goals this season. He was expected to be part of Carlo Ancelotti's squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico after scoring five times in his last six internationals.
