Drake Maye gives support for Mike Vrabel amid Dianna Russini controversy

New England PatriotsquarterbackDrake Mayeoffered his support for Mike Vrabel in his first comments since the 50-year-old coach'srelationship with former NFL reporter Dianna Russinicame under scrutiny.

Maye was asked about the drama surrounding Vrabel at an April 29 event promoting the upcoming Best Buddies Challenge: Hyannis Port. His response?

"We’re here for coach. We love coach, what he does for us, what he’s done for us this past year – you can’t speak into words,"Maye told Jonathan Hall of 7News. "Just thankful he’s our head coach. I know he’s dealing with some stuff off the field and out of the coaching world, we’re here for him. And I know he’s going to come back."

Maye's comments come after Vrabel missed Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to"begin to seek counseling" and be with his family. His decision came after he and Russini were photographed together at an exclusive Arizona resort ahead of the annual league meetings in late March.

The New York Post also published photos of the two interlocking hands and hugging. The outlet laterreleased what appeared to be more photos of the two– these from a New York bar and dating back to March 2020 – on April 23, the day the draft began.

Vrabel addressed stepping away from the Patriots for Day 3 in a conversation with reporters later that day.

"My priorities are my family and this football team – in that order. And there is a balance there that I am going to create," Vrabel said. "My family needs me this weekend, and that's where I'll be."

Henry made it clear his focus was on preparing for the 2026 season but credited Vrabel with doing "a great job" addressing players amid his off-the-field issues.

"It's been the same Vrabes bringing a lot of energy in the room,"Henry told reporters on April 28. "Obviously, he addressed it, and that's kinda all I'll say about it."

LeBron James weighs in on whether he's better than Michael Jordan: 'Our games are totally different'

The NBA GOAT debate generally comes down to two players: Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James. While some point to Jordan’s excellence in the Finals and will to win, others champion James for his longevity and ability to singlehandedly carry a team in the playoffs.

Yahoo Sports

When asked about how he compares to Jordan — a player James admired growing up — James said thereis no comparison, per ESPN.

"I never have compared myself to MJ because our games are totally different," James said. "I have been a point-forward/forward-point my whole life. I have always looked for the pass. MJ kind of looked for the shot. Not kind of, he did. He looked for the shot.

James said there are areas of the game where Jordan was the better player and areas of the game where James is better. He ultimately concluded that he and Jordan are “both great,” per ESPN. “We're both great basketball players."

James also broke down some of the aspects he admired in Jordan’s game, calling out the Bulls legend’s midrange shot, post game, ability to always get to his spot and his competitive spirit. James added that he was inspired by Jordan growing up, which shouldn’t come as a surprise considering James wore No. 23 — the same number of Jordan — when he first entered the NBA.

While James didn’t take the bait on the GOAT debate, he did take a moment to address some of the arguments his critics make when they try and downplay his accomplishments, per ESPN.

"When I was younger, I used to have the notion of like, people were getting on me for losing in the Finals, and when I was younger, I used to listen to it," James said. "Like, people will really rather you not make the playoffs or lose in the first round than to lose in the Finals, which is crazy to me. And I almost feel like, is it because it's me? Everybody has to say something about my career: 'Oh, well, he made eight straight Finals, but he was only able to win three.' 'He's the leading scorer in NBA history, but he's played 23 years.'

Yeah, but I am also fastest to 1,000 [points]. Fastest to 2,000. Fastest to 5,000. Fastest to 10,000. So when I started realizing it was just a knock on me, I started to appreciate it a little bit more. Like, I am pissed off that I didn't have a better winning percentage individually in the Finals, but for people to try to turn it into a negative, it doesn't bother me like it did when I was younger."

James, 41, is in the final stretch of his NBA career. While the longtime veteran is still playing at a high level, he hasn’t made any definitive decisions about his future. James’ contract is up at the end of the season, giving him a convenient way to leave the game for good. Alternatively, that also allows James to sign with whatever team he desires in pursuit of one more title.

When James does retire, the GOAT debate will be left to fans. James is clearly hesitant to engage on the topic, telling ESPN he knows fans will pick apart anything he has to say on the matter.

While some aspects of that debate might bother James, he ultimately only cares about one thing: Whether he lived up to wearing No. 23.

"I hope I made him proud at least, wearing that No. 23," James said.

Congressional Republicans are split on using taxpayer funds to build Trump's ballroom

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s top allies are pushing for Congress to fund a costlyWhite House ballroomafter the president was evacuated from a dinner Saturday in a sprawling hotel ballroom where agunman breached a security checkpoint.

But Republicans are divided on whether to make taxpayers foot the bill, with some preferring to let Trump raise money privately to construct the 90,000-square foot ballroom. And Democrats remain firmly opposed, meaning it would be a heavy lift for Republicans to pass a bill.

On Monday, a trio of Republicans senators — Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Katie Britt of Alabama and Eric Schmitt of Missouri — announced legislation to provide $400 million to build a new ballroom on the White House grounds.

“America has a problem, and we intend to fix it,” Graham told reporters. “This is not about Trump. It’s about the presidency of the United States. It’s about the person who occupies that office not being put at risk if they choose to go off campus.”

Graham said the money could be partially offset with “custom fees” but that it shouldn’t be left to private money. Underneath, he said, there will be "military stuff" and a "Secret Service annex."

“Private donations can be used, but I think they should be used for buying china and stuff like that,” he said.

Other Republicans told NBC News on Monday that the project should be done with private funding.

“I don’t know why you would do it” with taxpayer money “if it’s all funded," said Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., a Trump ally and spending hawk.

“We have $39 trillion in debt,” he added. “Maybe we ought to stop spending money.”

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said there’s a legal question about whether Congress has to vote to allow the White House to do major reconstruction on the White House property. But when it comes to funding, he said he prefers private over public funds.

“I think that the donors should all be public, but I don’t know why, if you’ve got private donors who want to do it ... I prefer that to the taxpayer being on the hook,” he said. “But I think it’s a separate question as to whether we need to authorize it.”

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said he too doesn’t favor using taxpayer funds for the new ballroom.

“I am always conservative, and he already has the money,” Paul said. “And I’m not against putting in reconciliation and doing a nominal amount. I’m not for funding the whole $500 million. I think he’s already raised the money through private means.”

Comcast Corp., the parent company of NBC News, is among thecorporate donors for Trump’s ballroom.

Asked to respond to fellow Republicans who oppose taxpayer funds, Graham said: “Just vote no. All I ask you to do is vote. I don’t care how you vote. I want a vote. I want to see: Where is America on this? I’ll bet you 90% of the people would love to have a better facility than the Hilton hotel to make sure this crap never happens again. ... There are people out there just one click away from picking up a gun or something else and trying to make America better by killing.”

“It’s not a private donation event — it’s a national security event.”

Meanwhile, Democrats remain overwhelmingly opposed to the project and argue that Trump has broken the law by failing to get approval from Congress before demolishing the East Wing and pursuing the project, which has been subject to lawsuits. They also say the use of private money lends itself to corruption.

That position remains, even as they denounce what law enforcement has called an assassination attempt on Trump.

“There’s no room for political violence in the United States of America. I’m glad the president is safe. I’m glad the Secret Service did its job. It is also just a fact that the private events happen outside of the White House, and so we can’t be society where there’s no public events and everything happens in a reinforced ballroom,” Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, said. “So whether there would ever be 60 votes for for a ballroom — I haven’t counted yet, but I also haven’t found any Democrat who says yes.”

One Democrat who has spoken out in favor of building a ballroom since the Saturday dinner is Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, often the first to buck his party. He suggested Sunday that opponents of the project have “Trump derangement syndrome.”

“After witnessing last night, drop the TDS and build the White House ballroom for events exactly like these,” Fettermansaid on X, without specifying whether it should receive taxpayer funds.

It appears highly unlikely that the ballroom legislation will get the 60 votes needed to pass the Senate.

Some Republicans are discussing whether to put the moneyinto a party-line billthey’ve begun advancing to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. Making changes to that bill, which only requires a simple majority to pass, could slow efforts to reopen the Department of Homeland Security amid a record-long shutdown.

Graham, who is shepherding that process as the chair of the Budget Committee, said his preference is to pass his ballroom bill through the regular process requiring 60 votes in the Senate.

“But if it doesn’t work, I’m for doing it anyway we can,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said he doesn't know that the ballroom can be funded by reconciliation, saying the existing budget only applies to other committees. "There are only two committees instructed judiciary and homeland security. But, you know, we’ll see what’s achievable," he told reporters.

On Monday, the Justice Departmentcharged Cole Tomas Allen, 31, a teacher and engineer from California, with attempting to assassinate Trump at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

Authorities said he ran through a security checkpoint in the Washington Hilton armed with a shotgun, handgun and knives and exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. He was prevented from entering the ballroom where the president, Vice President JD Vance, Speaker Mike Johnson, and others in the line of succession were attending the dinner, the criminal complaint released Monday said.

Authorities said Allen had sent family members a note before the shooting saying he wastargeting Trump administration officials, many who were in the ballroom.

“The White House ballroom project is not just a fun project for President Trump ... it is actually critical for our national security that a larger, secure building on this complex, which is the most secure complex in the world, is built to accommodate not only large amounts of guests, but also the president, the vice president, members of the Cabinet,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said Monday.

“The line of succession in this country should be able to gather free and safely without the fear of threats or political violence,” said Leavitt, who had been sitting at the head table with Trump.

Johnson, who can beseen on video being quickly evacuatedby his security detail, told reporters: “They’re going to have to re-evaluate this. This is why we need the ballroom... We need a facility that is secure enough to host events like this without having major national security concerns.”

However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., criticized the ballroom project when asked about it Monday, saying the U.S. national security priority should be to end the war in Iran.

“I have not seen a specific request with respect to the ballroom. But needless to say, we have to drive down the high cost of living. Life has become more expensive,” Jeffries told reporters, while calling on Congress to focus on other things. “Not a vanity project that resulted from the destruction — that was unauthorized — of the East Wing of the White House.”

Injury-depleted Timberwolves seek to eliminate Nuggets in Game 5

The Denver Nuggets entered this postseason with hopes of a deep run. Instead, they are in danger of bowing out in five games.

Field Level Media

The Minnesota Timberwolves overcame two significant injuries to win Game 4, 112-96, on Saturday night and can close out the series in Denver on Monday night. The Nuggets are on the brink of a first-round exit for the first time since 2022 when they were swept by Golden State.

Minnesota prevailed in Game 4 despite losing two key players to injuries. Starter Donte DiVincenzo to a torn Achilles just 79 seconds into the win. Then, All-Star Anthony Edwards suffered a bone bruise and a hyperextended left knee late in the second quarter and didn't return. ESPN reported Sunday that Edwards will miss multiple weeks.

Without DiVincenzo and Edwards, the Timberwolves had enough to overcome Denver in the second half Saturday night, led by Ayo Dosunmu's unexpected 43-point performance.

"I saw some guys get sad seeing both of those guys go down," Dosunmu said. "I just wanted to help bring us together."

Dosunmu will get many more opportunities to shine in Game 5. So will Jaden McDaniels, whose meaningless layup in the final seconds of Game 4 drew the wrath of Denver's Nikola Jokic. The three-time MVP confronted McDaniels in front of the Minnesota bench, gave him a shove and McDaniels grabbed Jokic's jersey.

"Clock still be running," McDaniels said after the game. "So, I'm going to go score."

It sparked a few more shoves, led to ejections for Jokic and Julius Randle and added more fuel to an already heated playoff rivalry.

"I don't regret it, because he scored after everybody stopped playing," Jokic said of his reaction to the layup.

The Nuggets will need that fire to stay alive in Game 5. Denver has been out of sync since the Timberwolves rallied from down 19 early in Game 2 to even the series. The Nuggets are also dealing with significant injuries to Peyton Watson, who has yet to play in the series, and Aaron Gordon.

Gordon missed Game 3 with a calf injury and was limited to 23 minutes Saturday night. He was lacking explosiveness and was clearly compromised.

"It was unfair for me to keep him out there," Denver coach David Adelman said of Gordon. "I felt like he was really laboring in the first half. We're going to have to decide (on his status) for Game 5."

Gordon played through a hamstring injury that affected him in last year's playoffs, but the Nuggets were able to extend eventual champion Oklahoma City to Game 7 in the second round. Denver has a deeper roster this year but is facing extinction in a year it felt could end with a second title in four seasons.

"We have got to show some fight in Game 5," Christian Braun said. "And I know we will. We are going to show up. We are going to play well. We are going to guard. We are going to be physical. We are going to rebound. It's not over."

Bayern must adapt with coach Kompany suspended for Champions League semifinal at PSG

Vincent Kompany's influence as coach is a key reasonBayern Munichis in the Champions League semifinals. Now Bayern will have to manage without him.

Germany Champions League Soccer

Bayern is preparing for arguably its toughest game of the season so far with its head coach suspended and assistant Aaron Danks reportedly due to take over.

Kompany was still involved in training Monday before Bayern's departure for Paris, but he'll be barred from the team's locker room and bench at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

“We’ll miss him on the touchline. He’s our boss, a coach who’d love to be out there with us,” Harry Kane has said.

A costly yellow card

It's all because Kompany was booked in Bayern'sthrilling quarterfinal winover Real Madrid for disputing the referee's decision to allow Madrid to play on and score after a hard tackle on Bayern defender Josip Stanisic.

That was Kompany's third yellow card in what was Bayern's 12th Champions League game of the season. He argued UEFA should relax the rules now there are more games than ever.

“It’s an extended format and it’s the strictest-ever ruling with a lot of interpretation from referees, where sometimes you can get a yellow card wrong as well. So what happens then?” Kompany said after the game.

“I’m not happy because of this, but it’s not important. The team can do it and I’m there for the return game. I have total faith in the team, the staff, to not just continue but also gain strength and motivation out of it.”

Danks on the biggest stage

Danks is one of Kompany's three main assistants and has head coaching experience. Just not much of it.

The 42-year-old English coach is a set-piece specialist whooversaw two gamesfor Aston Villa as caretaker coach in 2022, beating Brentford 4-0 then losing to Newcastle by the same score.

Preparations haven't exactly been easy, either.

With the Bundesliga title wrapped up, Bayern had hoped to rest key players against Mainz on Saturday, but Kompany had to bring on Kane, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala after slipping 3-0 down before coming back to win 4-3.

Musiala meets PSG again

Musiala's facing PSG for the first time since his badly broken leg against the French team at last season's Club World Cup.

The attacking midfielder didn't return until January but has recently looked back on form with two goals and four assists in his last five games, including setting up Luis Diaz's crucial third goal in the second game against Madrid.

Lennart Karl got his break in the Bayern team during Musiala's injury absence but the 18-year-old is likely to miss Tuesday's game with a muscle issue which has sidelined him for the last three weeks. Forward Serge Gnabry is out with a muscle tear that'sruled him out of the World Cuptoo.

A shot at the double-triple

The Champions League isn't just part of Bayern's quest for a triple. An even rarer achievement is possible.

Bayern is in the hunt for a triple-double of league, cup and Champions League for both its men's and women's teams. The Bayern women's squad has already won the German league, is in the final of the German Cup and islevel at 1-1 with Barcelonain the Women's Champions League semifinals.

Ministers have no chance of improving the health of the UK if women continue to be failed

People in the UKare living longer, but they’re living longer in poorer health. As highlighted bytheHealth Foundation, healthylife expectancy– the number of years a person spends in “goodhealth” – in the UK is declining, while other countries have managed to increase theirs.

The Independent US Smoking, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption among biggest risk factors for illness and disease in Britain (Local Library)

The Health Foundation has called forministers to place health on the same level of importance as economic growthand take up a new approach that looks beyond the NHS.

The findings of the think tank’s analysis, although concerning, are not surprising. Theusual drivers of poor health, such as deprivation, increased exposure to smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and poor housing, are well-trodden issues.

The 2010 Marmot Review, led by Professor Michael Marmot and considered a “watershed” moment at the time, laid bare the direct relationship between social inequalities, health, and life expectancy.

Tens years after the Marmot review, a 2020 report by the Health Foundation warned that healthy life expectancy had declined forwomensince 2010, and the percentage of life spent in ill health has increased for men and women.

The new analysis by the think tank has now warned that healthy life expectancy has declined for both men and women. However, it has declined more for females than for males. Healthy life expectancy for males in the UK fell from 62.9 to 60.7 years between 2012–14 and 2022–24, and from 63.7 to 60.9 years for females. This decline reflects a reduction in the proportion of life spent in good health, from 79 per cent to 77 per cent for males and from 77 per cent to 73 per cent.

The findings suggest clear inequalities in healthy life expectancy between men and women, just weeks after the government published its women’s health plan. That plan promised to improve women’s health and life expectancy. However, experts at another think tank, the Nuffield Trust, were skeptical that the measures set out in Labour’s plan for women would actually achieve this.

The Nuffield Trust pointed out that hitting this ambition would require the government to improve healthy life expectancy for women in the most deprived areas of the country by 12.8 years - a huge amount. The think tank said that while some of the strategies would help, such as supporting women and girls to be more active, the government had not provided evidence that these measures would “turn around” the decline.

“While some of the individual actions can reduce ill health and improve the health service experience for women, it seems unlikely the ambition to improve healthy life expectancy can be achieved,” the Nuffield Trust analysis said.

Will the UK government ever be able to turn the ship around on “healthy life expectancy” if its cornerstone plan for women, who represent over half the population, has no chance of changing the tide?

Sidney Crosby, Penguins top Flyers, stay alive in playoff series

Sidney Crosby had a goal and an assist Saturday as the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins stayed alive with a 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

Field Level Media

Rickard Rakell also scored a goal and set up another for Pittsburgh, which had been outscored 11-4 while dropping the first three games of the series. Penguins coach Dan Muse opted to start Arturs Silovs in net instead of Stuart Skinner, and Silovs responded with 28 saves in a crisp performance.

"I thought he played great. Big saves," Muse said of Silovs. " ... I've got a lot of confidence in both guys. I'm really happy for him. ... He made sure that he was prepared. When his name was called, he was ready. Great by him."

Denver Barkey and Travis Konecny scored for Philadelphia, which will have another chance to win the best-of-seven series Monday when the teams reconvene for Game 5 in Pittsburgh. Dan Vladar, playing with a right arm injury, turned aside 17 shots for the Flyers.

"Nothing's changing for us. Still being positive," Vladar said. "They're a really good team. It's not easy to win four in a row against a team like that. We've got to fight here."

Pittsburgh opened the scoring with 5:36 left in the first period on a creative setup by Erik Karlsson. Five seconds into a power play, Karlsson's feed from behind set up Crosby's smooth one-timer that skimmed off Vladar and into the net for a 1-0 advantage.

Crosby's 72nd career postseason goal was the only tally of the first period, but the Penguins made it 2-0 just 1:03 into the second. Vladar turned it over behind the net to Rakell, who dove into the crease to swat the puck in before the Flyers' netminder could recover.

Philadelphia got on the board with 4:20 left in the second period on Barkey's first career playoff goal. The 20-year-old got position on Karlsson in the crease and Trevor Zegras put it right on his stick for a tap-in tally.

Travis Sanheim hit the post shortly thereafter, leaving Philadelphia facing a 2-1 deficit heading into the third.

The Penguins extended their lead to 3-1 on Kris Letang's goal 4:27 into the final session. Crosby won a battle along the boards and kicked the puck to his longtime teammate, who skated in with plenty of room and blasted a slap shot past Vladar.

The Flyers got back within a goal on Konecny's one-timer with 12:57 left, but Connor Dewar's empty-netter with just under a minute remaining ended the hosts' late comeback hopes.

Silovs' best saves included a clutch stop on Zegras near the end of the first period and a pad save on Tyson Foerster's partial breakaway with about six minutes left in the second.
